Description

This Leupold Sequoia 20-60x80mm Spotting Scope Kit contains everything you need to head into the field, and it all comes in a convenient, portable hard case. With a huge magnification range; sharp, bright optics; and rugged, waterproof construction, the Leupold 20-60x80mm Spotting Scope gives you incredible power and flexibility in a rugged, field-ready optic. A lightweight, adjustable tripod features a compact design and multi-directional, tilting head for easy movement and flexibility. The tripod's multi-section adjustable legs have non-slip rubber feet.

The spotting scope's incredible range of magnification and power make it a versatile, capable choice for serious birders or a day at the range. With two models available - a straight body or a 45-degree angled body - you can choose the spotting scope best for viewing in any position. The rotating tripod mount enables flexibility in viewing, and an extendable lens shade eliminates glare, even in high-glare situations. Multicoat 4 lenses ensure high photopic transmission for excellent resolution, contrast, and brightness.

A twist-up eyecup and generous eye box make viewing a pleasure, even with glasses. This spotting scope is waterproof, fog-proof, and built for the wilderness with a tough, rugged armor. Limited lifetime warranty.

From humble immigrant beginnings, Leupold grew, based on a promise of quality, to become a classic American company. In 1907, Fred Leupold set up a one-man shop at 5th and Oak streets in Portland, Ore., to repair surveying equipment. He was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel, and later by inventor John Cyprian Stevens, and the foundations for a century of success were in place.

During Leupold's second half-century, the company has focused heavily on the sports optics business. Leupold's presence in the hunting and shooting market expands, and finally dominates, with innovative optics and features that are now legendary among hunters, shooters, and outdoors enthusiasts. Many of the industry's standards - nitrogen waterproofing, the Duplex reticle, and more - are Leupold creations.

My original purchase from [@] was for a set of Barska 20-140 x 80 Gladiator Zoom Binoculars. I wanted some thing strong due to my back yard view being a half mile long. The binocs were terrible even with a tripod and trying to use them simply as a spotting scope. Using the binocs as intended was nearly impossible as one side was never in focus which tempted us to try and use them as a spotting scope. Anyways and to make a long story short, I exchanged the binocs and some cash for the Leupold 20-60 x 80 Spotting Scope Kit. WOW, what a difference. This spotting scope is nearly just as powerful as that 140x pair of binocs and so much brighter and clearer. The view is clean and bright. I have no complaints with this scope at all. Since this item was purchased in a kit form(carrying case, tripod), it would not be fair if I did not briefly discuss these items. The carrying case is rugged and has an impressive feel to it. The tripod would be where my only complaint is at. While it is better then some, it could use some improvement in the way it operates. It has no fine adjustments so as to allow the operator to move the scope either up and down or left and right. The operator points the scope at the object to be viewed and locks(tightens) the movements on the scope. If the viewed object moves, the operator must loosen the scope adjustments and repeat the above process. Lastly, I want to give praise to hayneedle for their excellent customer service and return policy. The binocs mentioned above was my first purchase with this company. When I called hayneedle to return the binocs, their customer service representative was respectful and never once made me feel like it was me that had the problem and not their product. Because of that combination, hayneedle.com now has another loyal customer for life.

Pros: The optics are good, especially at the 20 power setting. The scope looks nice too-- not like some other "homely" scopes.

The scope also comes with a handy view finder tube.

The case is very nice for storing the scope.

The scope can also rotate on its long axis by loosening its support band. The instructions failed to mention this feature, but I figured it what the lever on the support band was for.

Cons: The eye relief tube, the part that adjusts for eyeglass wearers, is loose. The part is designed so that it extends outward when you rotate it. When you press your eye against it, it rotates back down-- very annoying. I put some masking tape under the tube and that provided enough friction to hold the eye relief tube in place.

Another con was the sun shade. It was so loosely attached, it would slide back down when you pointed the scope upward. Again, I place some tape under the sun shade tube and the additional friction keeps it in place.

The table top tripod is cheaply made of plastic. The scope is hefty and the tripod barely seems to handle the weight. I went out and bought a $200 Manfrotto tripod with a video head and that really compliments the scope.

The scope comes with a 1/4-20 threaded hole. Most camera tripods come with a 3/8-16 stud bolt, so beware if you are planning the mount it on your existing tripod.

The scope is made in Korea. I misread the Leupold web site and thought all their products were American made-- just the Gold Ring products are. This one is not, but it is still a quality product.

Comments about Leupold Sequoia 20-60x80 Spotting Scope Kit:

In the last year we brought this to the Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Park. We'd set it up when particular wildlife were in view and invite people to look. So many were noticeably surprised (especially those using only binoculars) at how clear and close the view was with this scope. It focuses well and it's easy to increase or decrease the magnification. The weight of the thing is a drawback and you'll need a strong tripod.

          Customer Q & A

Q1: What is the green tab on the barrel of the scope?

A: Leupold classifies their products by rings, Green and Gold. Green being a modest and economical price and the Gold being their high end material.

Q2: What is the physical size of this scope and what is the field of view at 100 yards?

          A: This scope is 15.9" in length.The Field of View at 1000 Yards: 20x: 99.6' (30 m at 1000 m)  60x: 99.6' (10 m at 1000 m)

Q3: What are the pros/cons of straight vs angled eye piece?

A: Straight bodied eyepieces are more for direct field viewing when you are crouched down and at the same level with the eyepiece. Straight eyepieces are ideal for hunters that will be trying to stay hidden. An angled eyepiece is for general viewing. It creates more comfort and allows you to do general land spotting with ease. Angled eyepieces are ideal for taking in a great view without having to continually adjust the height of the tripod.
