This telescope has a great instructional DVD which contains Autostar software for general astronomy. I found the Meade DS-2114LNT telescope to be quite adequate for watching the planets, although it took me some time to set it up. Instructions are good if you take your time and read them.

I just got this scope for christmas. After 4 nights in a row that were cloudy i finaly got a chance to try this thing out. It was easy to setup and the eyepieces were in the medium quality wise. I had trouble setting up autostar as i am a begginer and this is my firt scope btw and tried to align the telescope but failed miserably from testing it out by telling it to go to the moon and being 20 degrees off so i wish autostar was a bit easier to use but it was mainly my fualt. I used the controller to manually find objects. I first went to the moon and was VERY impressed with the big beuatiful and also crisp lunar views. Then when i moved to jupiter i had a problem. The scope did not come with a barlow lens and i didnt hav a chance to buy one yet so jupiter was this very small planet through the 9mm eyepiece and i couldnt make out much detail but i did find 3 of the 4 gallilean moons. When i looked at the orion nebula i could not really make out much but was able to find 4 main stars and some haze around them so i am planning on getting some good filters. Overall i think this is a good telescope for a begginer and for viewing the moon an the planets but you may need a barlow lens. This scope was O.K. for viewing nebulae and galaxies but i would encourage buying a couple contrast filters first. I woul recomend some UHC and OIII filters and also a cheap eyepiece and filter kit with a barlow lens. if u want to see nebula like me i would recomend getting a cheap dobsonian with 6-8 inches of apperature and learn to star hop.
I believe i am at fualt fo the electronic problems with autostar so dont use that as a good example.
